Martial Arts/Kung fu concept series

I’ve been drawing a series of artwork and studies around the theme of kung fu and martial artists.  Have a look at the poses in these characters concept artwork.

Character concept design of a martial artist in ready to fight stance. Drawn him topless in order to make him look tougher and to emphasize his muscular build. You might see that I’m somewhat influenced by dragonball from the way I draw muscles and muscular arms. I like to draw orange colour baggy pants because I want him to be from Shaolin.

Figure was drawn using pencil and outlined with fine liner. Coloured in with Letraset markers.

The background was done in photoshop, the character’s gorgeous shadow was made by first selecting the background and then selecting the inverse to get just the character’s outline. I then coloured the outline black to get the silhouette, and then translating that behind the figure into being the shadow.

I’m very pleased with the way this turned out, I love the long shadow effect I created and the general colour scheme of the whole picture looks fantastic!

The next image I studied the look of chinese traditional clothing by drawing from a photo reference.

The different shades of red didn’t show up very well, adjusting the contrast and brightness didn’t help either. This is the best I could get it.

This was the photo I used to draw from..

Studying Shaolin wushu stance

Bajiquan kata stance

I’m pretty good at character and concept art as you can see.. I’m currently looking for work so if you feel that my skills would be of use for your project or company, please get in touch with me and discuss hiring me!! thx

About Way of the Artchemist

Love of manga/anime, telling of stories in film and tv around sci-fi and fantasy, has influenced me to draw in the way that I do and, it's these interests that led me to the alternative media and made me question the nature of reality; exploring the ideas around consciousness, and the philosophies of life.
